[대학수업][교환학생] Speaking - Interview and Presentation

0. 들어가며

 Speaking은 제가 느끼기에 University of Idaho에서 수강했던 수업 중에서 가장 평가가 후했던 수업이자, 그럼에도 난이도가 가장 높았던 수업이었습니다. 가장 먼저 다른 사람들 앞에서 이야기한다는 부담감을 이겨내야 했으며, 제가 아는 범위의 단어를 적절하고 빠르게 골라야 하는 능력이 필요했고, 머릿속에서 그 단어들을 옳게 배열하는 과정도 거쳐야 했습니다. 그래도 저는 '진짜 영어를 배운다'는 느낌이 들어서 그런지 수업을 듣는 내내 무척 즐거웠던 것으로 기억합니다.

 

 Speaking 수업에서는 인터뷰나 발표, 토론 등 다양한 과제를 수행했고, 그 중 몇 가지는 Word 및 PPT 파일로 컴퓨터 안에 잘 보관되어 있습니다. 이번 게시물에서는 제가 Speaking 수업에서 가장 공을 들였던 '인터뷰 및 발표 과제'를 어떻게 진행했는지 기록해두고자 합니다. 과제가 어떠한 과정으로 진행되었으며, 과제를 수행하면서 어떤 우여곡절을 겪었는지 등을 적어둔다면 분명 나중에 비슷한 일을 겪을 때 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 생각하기 때문입니다.

 

 과제는 아래의 순서대로 진행되었습니다.

(2) 인터뷰 진행

(3) PPT 제작 및 발표, 질문

 

 저희는 어디까지나 영어를 배우는 입장이었기 때문에 교수님께서는 인터뷰와 발표를 쉽게 할 수 있도록 쉬운 주제를 고를 것을 권유하습니다. 그리고 각 순서마다 교수님께서 직접 과제가 잘 진행되고 있는지 확인해주셨습니다. 예컨대 인터뷰 대상이 듣기에 질문이 괜찮은지, 혹은 PPT의 만듦새가 어떠한지를 검사하신 후 피드백을 해주셨습니다. 덕분에 과제의 체감 난이도는 그렇게 높지 않았습니다.

 

 

 

1. 인터뷰 주제 및 질문 선정

 교수님께서 이미 인터뷰 대상을 'University of Idaho에 재학하는 1학년 미국학생'으로 정해두셨기 때문에, 저희는 그들에게 맞게 인터뷰 주제를 선정해야 했습니다. 때마침 저는 코로나19 대유행 기간동안 수많은 미국인들이 마스크 필수 착용 반대 시위를 여는 것을 뉴스를 통해 지켜본 바 있었고, 그들 안에서 자유란 대체 무엇일지 너무 궁금했습니다. 그래서 미국 현지 학생과 직접 대화를 할 수 있는 귀중한 기회를 이용해 이 호기심을 직접 해소해보기로 다짐했습니다. 따라서 저는 인터뷰 주제로 자유와 규칙(Freedom and Rules)'를 선정하였고, 해당 주제와 관련한 질문을 5개 가량을 선정했습니다.

- details: Some people say that restricting gatherings is out of the Freedom.
- The other side says that it is unavoidable decision for safety.

 하지만 인터뷰 질문을 읽어보신 교수님께서는 과감한 제 시도를 칭찬해주시면서도 몇 가지 피드백을 해주셨습니다.

 

(1) 어떤 자유를 질문하는 것인가? 질문이 너무 추상적이어서 대답하기 곤란할 것 같다. 

(2) 총기 규제와 같이 사람들에게 예민하게 다가올 수 있는 문제는 피하는 것이 좋다.

 

 교수님의 피드백에도 불구하고 무엇이 문제였는지 감을 잡지 못했고, 결국 같은 수업을 듣고 계시던 현지 한국인 교수님께 도움을 받고 나서야 겨우 크리스틴 교수님의 의도를 겨우 알아챌 수 있었습니다. 제가 선택한 주제가 너무 복잡하다고 말씀하고 싶으셨던 것입니다. 하지만 어떻게 해서든 현지 학생들에게 '자유와 규칙'에 대해 질문하고 싶었고, 결국 질문 방법을 약간 변경하면서도 몇 개의 질문을 삭제하는 것으로 타협했습니다.

 먼저 follow up 질문의 개수를 줄이고 구조를 단순화하여 응답자가 편하게 답변할 수 있도록 만들었습니다. 예를 들어, (예시1)에서는 How do you define personal freedom? 질문 다음에 자신이 생각하는 Personal freedom의 중요도를 백분율로 표현하고 그 이유를 질문하는 꼬리질문을 했었습니다. 그러나 (예시2)에서는 How do you define personal freedom? 이후 얼마나 personal freedom이 중요한지를 질문하여 응답자가 질문을 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 만들었습니다.

 

 두 번째 변경점은 응답자에게 제시하는 예시를 크게 바꾸었습니다. 교수님께서 말씀하신대로 예민하게 받아들여질 수 있는 총기규제와 관련된 내용은 삭제하였습니다. 그리고 질문을 덜 민감하면서 구체적으로 변경하였습니다. (예시1)에서는 미국에서 발생한 코로나19 마스크 필수 착용 반대 시위에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지를 물어보았지만, (예시2)에서는 마스크 착용이 필수가 아닌 미국과는 달리 한국에서는 외부에서 마스크 착용이 필수인 대조상황을 제시하며 한국에 오면 기꺼이 규칙을 따를 것인지를 물었습니다.

 

 저는 제시하는 사례를 조금 완곡하게 변경하면서 질문 의도가 달라졌다는 사실을 눈치챘습니다. (예시1)에서는 자유를 근거로 규정 및 규칙에 반발하는 미국인들의 사례였습니다. 따라서 응답자가 그들의 행동을 비판하거나 혹은 옹호하는 것으로 그들이 자유와 규칙 중 무엇을 더 존중하는지 쉽게 파악할 수 있었습니다. 그러나 (예시2)는 국가별 코로나19 대처 방식에 대해 설명하고 있습니다. 그래서 질문자는 응답자의 답변을 통해 타국의 문화를 얼마나 존중할 수 있는지만 파악할 수 있습니다. 저는 제 질문지의 한계를 잘 알고 있었지만, 이미 (예시1)에서 (예시2)로 변경하는데 많은 시간을 소모해버린 후여서 질문을 변경할 시간이 없었습니다. 그래서 (예시2)를 최종 질문지로 선정하였습니다.

 

 

 

2. 인터뷰 진행

 저희는 Speaking 수업 시간에 인터뷰를 진행했습니다. 인터뷰를 진행하는 날에는 본래 수업하던 장소가 아닌 다른 장소에서 모였는데, 크리스틴 교수님께서 다른 교수님께 미리 양해를 구해두신 것 같았습니다. 덕분에 마음 편하게 인터뷰를 진행할 수 있었습니다. 교수님께서 가르쳐주신 대로 인터뷰를 진행하기 앞서 사적인 정보를 침해하지 않는 간단한 질문으로 가볍게 분위기를 풀어준 뒤 질문지에 적힌 대로 하나씩 물어보았습니다. 인터뷰 전 과정은 응답자의 허가를 얻어 녹음을 하는 동시에 대답의 요점을 놓치지 않기 위해 필기를 병행했습니다. 교수님께서 사전에 말씀하셨던 대로 총 3명의 학생들에게 인터뷰를 진행했습니다.

 

 그후 결과 보고 PPT를 만들기 위해 응답 내용을 Word로 정리했습니다. 한 장소에서 여러 인터뷰가 동시에 진행되었기에 종종 녹음에 다른 잡음이 섞이기도 했지만, 필기한 내용을 가지고 응답자의 대답을 유추해가면서 받아적기를 여러 번, 드디어 모든 녹음 내용을 옮겨적는데 성공했습니다.

- I feel like it is very relative. It’s different from each person to each person and they have different morals and think that right and wrong. But, personal freedom should be able to strive whoever, whatever want to be. Strive better and better yourself.

- It is important to me. It would be able to make my own decisions. And It can choose various things. And It could be make me confidence.

I think rules and laws are protect to us from ourselves to be honest. We will want do what will want do when will want do. It will be hard to control people. I agree with that something we able to choose that and I should be able to choose like your decision. You should be able to choose your own decision in your own life. People has different think in their life.

1 to 10, 8 a half. Rules and laws are very instructure, and they create normality and society like foundation everyone supposed act. and sometimes it can divide us. So, especially rules and laws are tensible like it can be change very easily.

- However, in South Korea, people have to wear mask for safety.

- Even though I disagree with their rules, I think that I have to follow their rules because South Korea think that wearing a mask is very important.

I don’t necessarily thing it. There were reason to make sure do not out of line. Things more structure more probably.

In America, It is pretty important that we have to follow this things.

- I think personal freedom is being able to do what ever you want anytime, like if you have a job, choose the job is the personal freedom. I think just feeling free is also personal freedom.

- It is important to me. If I didn’t feel personal freedom, I will very stress out, like even doing school, I can leave anytime or just go home and take a nap something is very important to me.

- No, I think all the laws apply to everybody fairly. And everybody has to follow same the rules, that’s a not good thing but if some people are getting approach to others, than that’s are not problem. Like we have to follow the rule of attending class, that is fair because class is good for you own have to go., can’t complain about unfair.

 

(2-1) follow up: How much is it important to you?
- I think they are really important to me, because if without the rules and laws, it would be out of control.

- However, in South Korea, people have to wear mask for safety.
- Question: If you were in Korea, are you going to follow the rules?
- Yes, I’m followed here too. I choose to wear mask because one of to think about the people will keep other people safe, even if I was sick. But South Korea would wear the mask is follow the rules, because it’s where I am. And you have to respect the rules where you are. So, I think we should be a rule here we should wearing the mask, but, that’s OK.

 

 

 

3. PPT 제작 및 발표, 질문.

 인터뷰 내용을 모두 정리한 저는 본격적으로 PPT를 제작하기 시작했습니다. 결과 보고 PPT를 만들면서 가장 고민이 되었던 점은 '적은 수의 인터뷰 결과를 어떻게 가공해야 하는가'였습니다. 이를 위해서 저는 먼저 인터뷰를 시행한 목적을 다시 생각해보았습니다. 제가 인터뷰를 진행한 이유는 (1) 미국인들이 생각하는 자유의 가치를 알고 싶다, (2) 미국인들이 생각하는 규율의 가치를 알고 싶다, (3) 미국인들이 자유와 규율 둘 중 무엇을 더 중요시하는지를 알고 싶다로 총 세 가지가 있었습니다.

 

 (3)의 경우는 세 명의 응답자가 규율을 따를 것인지 혹은 말 것인지만 파악하면 되는 문제이므로 크게 어렵지는 않았습니다. 만약 한국의 규율을 따르지 않겠다고 답한다면 그들은 자유를 중요시 하는 사람일 것이고, 규율을 따르겠다고 응답한다면 그들은 비교적 규율을 중요시 하는 사람인 것입니다. 그래서 저는 이 부분을 PPT 안에서 표현할 때 3명 중 몇 명이 예/아니오라고 응답했는지를 표했습니다.

 

 (1)과 (2)는 제가 이전에 배웠던 텍스트마이닝에서 배웠던 아이디어를 사용했습니다. 만약 누군가가 중요하게 생각하는 바를 다른 이에게 피력한다면 비슷한 의미의 단어를 반복적으로 언급할 것입니다. 즉, (1) 미국인들이 생각하는 자유의 가치를 알고 싶다면 관련 응답에서 응답자들이 어떤 단어를 반복적으로 응답했는지를 찾는다면 큰 문제가 되지 않을 터였습니다. 그러나 막상 중복된 단어를 찾으려고 하니, 단어의 가짓수도 적었을 뿐만 아니라 같은 표현이라고 단정짓기에는 애매한 경우도 종종 있었습니다. 예컨대 rules에 관한 질문에서 'hard to control'이라는 표현과 'out of line'이라는 표현을 하나로 포함시킬 수 있는가와 같은 문제였습니다. 누군가를 통제하지 못해서 선을 넘는 경우는 있지만 엄밀히 말하면 두 표현은 약간 다르다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 이 경우 저는 각 응답자의 대답 중 핵심단어를 추출하는 방법을 택했습니다. 이렇게 추출된 세 개의 단어는 아래와 같습니다.

 인터뷰를 어떻게 정리할지 정해지자 작업에 속도가 붙기 시작했습니다. 저는 정리된 내용을 바탕으로 PPT를 만들었으며, 발표를 위한 대본도 작성했습니다. 발표 당일에는 대본을 읽을 수 없었으므로 최대한 발표 내용을 이해하고 외울 수 있도록 노력했습니다. 안타깝게도 제가 발표에 활용했던 PPT 파일은 게시하기 곤란하므로 대신 발표 대본을 공유해드리고자 합니다.

- And I impressed about their attitude to respect other country’s rules and laws.

 

 

 실제 발표 때는 대본을 보고 읽을 수 없었기 때문에 약간 다르게 말한 부분도 있습니다. 하지만 발표의 흐름은 사전에 작성한 대본의 흐름을 그대로 따라갔기 때문에 크게 차이는 없을 것이라 생각합니다.

 

 발표 당일, 미국의 현지 학생들의 참관 아래 저는 자진에서 가장 먼저 발표하겠노라고 말씀드렸습니다. 이런 일은 원래 나중에 하는 것보다 먼저 발표를 마치는 편이 제게는 훨씬 나았기 때문입니다. 약 5분 가량의 발표를 마친 후, 저는 3명의 미국 학생들에게 질문을 받았습니다. 그들의 질문을 완벽하게 이해하기 어려웠지만 교수님의 도움 아래 그럭저럭 답변을 잘 해낼 수 있었습니다. 제가 어떤 답변을 했는지는 기억이 잘 나지 않습니다만, 어떤 질문을 받았는지 정도는 기억이 납니다. 왜냐하면 그들이 제게 한 질문의 수준이 너무 높았기 때문입니다. 몇 주 간 공들여서 준비한 발표여서 그들의 질문이 조금 기쁘기도 했지만, 즉석에서 답변을 구사해야 하는 터라 약간 곤란한 마음도 없지 않아 있었습니다.

- 이것은 젊은 학생들을 대상으로 조사한 결과인데, 연세가 든 사람들을 대상으로 같은 인터뷰를 진행한다면 과연 결과도 동일하게 나올 것이라고 생각하는가?

- 발표자가 예상했던 결과는 무엇이었으며, 왜 그렇게 예상했는가?

 

 

 

4. 활동 후 느낀 점

 이번 활동을 통해서 저는 의사소통의 기본에 대해 다시 한 번 생각해보게 되었습니다. 인터뷰 질문지를 만들기 전, 저는 단순히 한국어 질문을 영어로 옮기기 위해 노력했습니다. 그러다보면 항상 어려운 영어단어를 사용할 수밖에 없었습니다. 하지만 크리스틴과 인터뷰에 대해 이야기를 나누기도 하고, 발표준비를 하면서 그것이 잘못된 행동이었다는 것을 겨우 깨달았습니다. 결국 말하기의 본질은 다른 사람들과 소통하는 법을 배우는 것이고 다른 사람들과 소통하기 위해서는 상대방이 이해하기 쉬운 방향으로 이야기해야 한다는 것을 말이죠.

 

 예컨대 '자유와 안전 사이의 영역을 어떻게 조정하는 것이 옳다고 생각하십니까'라는 의미를 담은 'how do you think should be compartmentalize the area between freedom and safety?'라는 질문은 직관성이 떨어집니다. 만약 제가 다시 이 질문을 해야 한다면 이렇게 쓸 것입니다. 'Which one do you think more important between freedom and safety?'. 자유와 안전 중 어느 쪽이 더 중요한지를 묻는 질문으로 의미는 크게 바뀌지 않았지만 훨씬 쉬운 단어로 물어볼 수 있는 것입니다.

 

 이 과제를 기점으로 저는 Speaking에 대한 부담감을 크게 덜 수 있었습니다. 다양한 단어를 외워야 한다는 강박증보다는 지금까지 외운 단어를 어떻게 효과적으로 사용할 수 있을지를 생각해보게 되었습니다. 어떻게 하면 잘 말할 수 있을까를 고민하는 것이 아닌, 어떻게 하면 잘 전달할 수 있을지를 고민하게 되었습니다. 완벽한 문장을 만드는 것이 아닌 이해하기 쉬운 문장을 어떻게 만들어야 할 지를 고민하게 되었습니다. 저는 지금이라도 Speaking 수업을 만날 수 있어서 행운이었다고 생각합니다. 그렇지 않았다면 Speaking의 본질에서 벗어나 이상한 부분에서 고민하며 시간을 보내고 있었을 테니까요. 즐겁고 보람찬 수업이었습니다.
