0. Compare and Contrast 에세이에 관한 설명
Compare and Contrast 에세이는 Composition 수업에서 가장 먼저 시작한 작문과제입니다. 에세이는 오직 수업시간 동안에만 작성한다는 교수님의 교수 방침으로 인해 몇 달에 걸쳐서 하나의 에세이를 작성하게 되었습니다. Compare and Contrast 작문은 기본적으로 두 개의 대비되는 대상을 일정한 주제에 따라 비교하는 방식으로 진행합니다. 에세이 작성 방법은 크게 '주제'를 중심으로 비교하는 Point by Point와 '대상'을 중심으로 비교하는 Block Method로 나누어집니다. 예컨대 대상을 밥과 빵으로 정한 뒤 주제를 '재료가 다르다', '만드는 방식이 다르다'라는 식으로 글을 작성하고 싶다고 가정합니다. 그러면 아래와 같이 글을 작성할 수 있습니다.
(예시1) Point by Point : 주제를 중심으로 비교하기
(첫번째 단락) 첫째, 재료가 다릅니다. 밥을 만들기 위해서는 쌀을 사용해야 하는 반면, 빵은 밀을 이용해서 만듭니다..
(두번째 단락) 둘째, 만드는 방법이 다릅니다. 밥은 일반적으로 물을 이용해서 간단하게 세척한 뒤 열과 압력을 이용해 찌는 방식을 이용합니다. 그러나 빵은 밀을 곱게 간 후 반죽하여 고열에 구워서 완성합니다.
(예시2) Block Method : 대상을 중심으로 비교하기
(첫번째 단락) 밥은 쌀을 이용해서 만듭니다. 일반적으로 물을 이용해서 간단하게 세척한 후 열과 압력을 이용해 쪄서 완성합니다.
(두번째 단락) 빵은 밀을 이용해서 만듭니다. 먼저 밀을 빻아서 가루를 냅 후 반죽을 합니다. 그리고 고열에 구워서 완성합니다.
일반적으로 Block Method가 Point by Point보다 더 적은 문단이 나옵니다. Block Method는 비교할 대상의 수만큼만 본문 단락을 완성하면 되는 반면, Point by Point는 비교할 주제의 수만큼 본문 단락을 작성해야 하기 때문입니다. Composition 수업에서는 Point by Point 방식을 채택했습니다. 작문 교수님께서는 저희에게 Academic word를 사용해야 한다고 자주 말씀하시고는 했습니다. 예컨대 'thing'보다는 구체적인 무언가를, 'buy'보다는 'purchase'를 사용하는 식입니다. 게다가 같은 단어를 자주 사용하는 것도 좋지 않다고 말씀하셔서 작문하는 내내 동의어를 찾아보아야만 했습니다.
Composition 수업을 통틀어서 작문을 하는 과정은 항상 아래의 순서대로 진행되었습니다.
(1) 글감(topic) 선정 (최대 세 개 선정)
(2) 개요(outline) 작성
(3) 에세이 작성
한국어에서도 마찬가지이지만, 에세이를 작성하는 속도와 완성도는 개요가 얼마나 짜임새 있게 잘 만들어졌느냐에 따라 크게 달라졌습니다. 개요는 구체적으로 작성할 필요는 없지만, 그렇다고 너무 대충 만들게 되면 이후 단계에서 고생하니 신경써서 잘 만드실 것을 권해드립니다. 이번 게시물에서는 글감 선정 단계를 제외하고 개요(outline)와 에세이를 어떻게 작성했는지, 실제로 제출한 과제물과 함께 말씀드리도록 하겠습니다.
1. 개요 작성
개요(outline)는 에세이를 작성하기 전 내용을 구상하고 정리한 결과물입니다. 개요에 들어가는 내용은 구체적일 필요가 전혀 없기 때문에 1~2문장 정도로 아주 짧게 정리하면서도 서론-본론-결론이 모두 들어가 있어야 합니다. 서론과 본론, 그리고 결론에게는 일정한 양식이 있으며 Composition 교수님께서는 이 양식을 엄격히 지킬 것을 요구하셨습니다.

(2) Background : 작성하고자 하는 글감에 관한 배경지식

(1) First Body Paragraph : 첫 번째 주제 논의
(2) Second Body Paragraph : 두 번째 주제 논의

(1) Restate Main Idea : 지금까지 논의한 주제 다시 제시
(2) My Final Thought : 주제에 관한 나의 생각
에세이의 세부 구성요소를 살펴보면 사실 한국어로 작성하는 에세이와 크게 다르지 않다는 사실을 금방 눈치채실 수 있으실것입니다. 단, 개요를 작성할 때는 Introduction, 그리고 Conclusion의 구성요소까지 세세하게 지켜가며 작성할 필요는 없었습니다. 제가 작성한 개요는 아래와 같습니다.

When I go to America for exchange student, there are so many differences between Korea and America so that I was very surprised. Among others, I will write here the most interested thing that I found in America.

- In America, both side doorknob is different : Customer familiar
- In Korea, both side doorknob is same shape : administrator familiar
(2) Having open mind about sex
- In America, they distributed condorms in restroom for free.
- In Korea, many people think very bad about sex.
(3) Attitude for open to others
- In America, They are willing to meet others and talk.
- In Korea, many people don’t like to meet others.

Thus, their public friendly mind and attitude for open to anything will be made country more efficient and powerful.
2. 에세이 작성
에세이는 약 한 달 동안 작성했습니다. 모든 내용을 쓴 뒤 수차례 문법 오류를 확인했지만 아마도 아직 오류가 남아있을 가능성이 높습니다. 에세이 제출 결과, 문법 및 전반적인 내용구성 부분에서 약간 낮은 평가를 받아서 총점 70점 중 64점을 기록했습니다. 아래의 에세이는 최종 제출한 에세이에서 문법을 약간 수정한 버전입니다.

Discussion of Three Differences between Korea and America
History and culture produce many differences between nations. However, since the 19th century, the western civilizations have violently changed debilitated countries under the blood and bodies. After the Colonial era, they did not return their own systems such as politics, society, and economy because they were overwhelmed in front of invader’s rules, power, even their life. This is the reason why modern civilizations look very similar. South Korea also has changed their whole lifestyle more like America as a result of the Korean War. Notwithstanding, three examples of differences between Korea and America will note that many parts of life are still different. In particular, the doorknob, people’s perspective about sex and attitude when they meet others should show the gap in their mind.
The first difference between Korea and America is the doorknob. In America, both sides of doorknob are different according to the way to open it, so that people can recognize easily which way have to be chosen between “push” and “pull”. When you will open “Push” side, Doorknob is more similar to button, so you can open the door just “push”. However, in Korea, both sides of doorknob are almost same. This means many Koreans unconcern how to open the door between “Push” and “Pull”. Through this example, people can recognize which country consider civils’ behavior. In American, they clearly separated how to open the door by make doorknob differently, so they induce the behavior of the public. In other side, in South Korea, they focus on cost efficiency by making doorknob same. Thus, American has user-friendly perspective rather than Korea.
The second difference is a perspective about sex. The study of Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) in 2017 shows that 93.5% of American parents felt that it is important to have sex education in middle school. Also 96% of parents felt that sex education must be taught in high school. This study represents Americans’ progressive perspective about education of sexual. On the other hand, In Korea, people consider parts of the sex to be negative and unhygienic. July 2020, A high school teacher attempted to teach how to use the condoms to students, but this class was canceled because of student’s parents’ opposition. They have complained to Office of Education, so the teacher was interrogated by Office of Education. This example represents Korean’s perspective about sexual education is more conservative than American.
The last difference is the attitude in meeting other people. In America, most people prefer to maintain wide-and-shallow relationships in their life. That is to say that it is difficult to be invited their hideaway rather than talking and exchanging addresses to others. Their behavior included sociability so that they are willing to exchange their own information such as phone number or email address to others even though they just met for the first time. On the contrary, In Korea, most people never exchange their own information except when they complete some work together. When they face other people who they meet for the first time, they feel uncomfortable and nervous. This implies that many Koreans develop narrow-and-deep relationship than Americans. The differences about relationship between Korean and American can be shown by party culture. American often hold party with unfamiliar people, but Korean usually hold a party with familiar people such as family members, co-workers to celebrate something or build a relationship more friendly. Therefore, approaching people differently according to country will make your relationships successfully.
In conclusion, the main differences between America and Korea are the doorknob, perspective about sexual education and attitude in meeting other people. Through these examples, people can realize that many differences occur because of their whole life. This means that these examples are just part of differences between them. Thus, people must recognize that the most important mindset in the generation of diversity is just accept other people, not understand.
